Research Studies
In-game Description:
Generated hourly during planetary research production.

Used for advanced missions and Legion Ascendancy (coming soon). Each planet that produces research has a chance of generating a study each hour. Higher production increases the chance. More research planets = more chances to generate studies.

Explanation:
Research studies are granted by each planet individually, based on that planet's Research production. Your overall player production isn't relevant, just the production on each planet. Moreover, the chance for a planet to produce a Study isn't linear: increasing the Research on a planet gives diminishing returns. Thus, creating pure-Research planets isn't particularly effective. The exact calculation seems to be along the lines of: log(Research * 2.8 / 1000) / (10 * log(2.8)). Short version: spread out your Optimizers and make sure to construct structures that have a side of Research. A planet producing around 1k Research (maybe 1.1k, hard to ascertain for certain) will have a .1 chance of producing a study; bump this to 2.8k for a .2 chance, and about 8k for a .3 chance.

Based on Rank. Higher Rank gives more capacity, but with diminishing returns. Specifically, 49.912 * Rank ^ .4632. This is close to 50 times the square root of your rank.
